It is estimated that around 1/3 of people who have died and come back, often those who suffer a cardiac arrest report what is called a Near Death Experience. The term was coined by Dr. Raymond Moody in 1975 in his book Life After Life. In this book Dr. Moody recorded and also compared the experiences of 150 people who were clinically dead or almost dead and recovered and came back to life.
The groundbreaking, bestselling classic, now available in a special fortieth-anniversary edition that includes a new Foreword from Eben Alexander, M.D., author of Proof of Heaven, and a new Afterword by the author.
Raymond Moody is the “father” of the modern NDE (Near Death Experience) movement, and his pioneering work Life After Life transformed the world, revolutionizing the way we think about death and what lies beyond. Originally published in 1975, it is the groundbreaking study of one hundred people who experienced “clinical death” and were revived, and who tell, in their own words, what lies beyond death.
A smash bestseller that has sold more than thirteen million copies around the globe, Life After Life introduced us to concepts—including the bright light, the tunnel, the presence of loved ones waiting on the other side—that have become cultural memes today, and paved the way for modern bestsellers by Eben Alexander, Todd Burpo, Mary Neal, and Betty Eadie that have shaped countless readers notions about the end life and the meaning of death.
You cannot mention NDE's without Raymond Moody in the same sentence. He is considered to be the go-to when it comes to NDEs and if you are starting out, this is a good place to start as it was with this book that many people themselves became aware of NDEs and the research and experiences behind them.
After two near-death experiences, author Dannion Brinkley shares the profoundly moving account of his extraordinary experiences in the afterlife in this updated trade paperback edition of his international and New York Times bestseller
As the description says, Brinkley supposedly died twice. He has worked with Raymond Moody in the past who was fascinated and impressed by the accounts he has given. Brinkley however is a controversial figure with many doubting his claims and finding inconsistencies with his stories. On the more controversial side, Brinkley claimed to have received a number of prophecies during his NDE's which were later said to have come true. He also claimed that his NDEs gave him the gift of telepathy. If you are into spirituality and want to hear from a person who has had an NDE, then you will really enjoy this book. I found parts of it difficult to read as some of it seemed a little fantastic for me, however, it was well written in a story format and I also found it oddly comforting giving a perspective on a topic I couldn't possibly know so who am I to question it? Regardless of if you believe or not, it was still a very interesting read.
THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES • An impeccably researched, page-turning investigation, revealing stunning and wide-ranging evidence suggesting that consciousness survives death, from New York Times bestselling author Leslie Kean
“An engaging, personal, and transformative journey that challenges the skeptic and informs us all.”—Harold E. Puthoff, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin
In this groundbreaking book, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Leslie Kean investigates the unexplained continuity of the human psyche after death. Here, Kean explores the most compelling case studies of young children reporting verifiable details from past lives, contemporary mediums who seem to defy the boundaries of the brain and of the physical world, apparitions providing information about their lives on earth, and people who die and then come back to report journeys into another dimension.
Based on facts and scientific studies, Surviving Death includes fascinating chapters by medical doctors, psychiatrists, and PhDs from four countries. As a seasoned reporter whose work transcends belief systems and ideology, Kean enriches the narrative by including her own unexpected, confounding experiences encountered while she probed the question concerning all of us: Do we survive death?
As the description above states, this was the inspiration for the Netflix hit Surviving Death series. I originally watched the series and then found out it was based on this very book so I ran out and bought it straight away. It doesn't cover NDEs exclusively however there is a section of the book dedicated to this much like the series. It covers other areas as well and is so incredibly well researched and written that I would recommend it as a must-have book for everyone's library. If you enjoyed the Netflix series you will LOVE this book.
So there you have 3 recommendations that cover NDEs. Of course, as always I could include more, but it is here that I hand it over to you to add to this list and recommend your favourite books when it comes to the topic of NDEs.
If you would like to learn more about NDEs and some of the studies conducted in researching it, here is an article I have written on Near-Death Experiences
